This Review is based on both my experience dealing with Falcon, and the actual product they sell, and at the end of the day , what really maters is the performance of the assembled speaker.
Dealing with Falcon Acoustics, is a phenomenal experience, because Jerry will go extra mile, whether you are buying one capacitor, a whole set, or a whole kit. I have been dealing with Falcon for a few years now and their product and packaging is always TOP! Jerry is very knowledgeable, and helpful, with lots of ideas around Kef, IMF, or similar type speakers.
My wish to build LS3/5a arouse 5 years ago, and since I have very many sets of these Kef drivers, I decided to put this together. I always had a great appreciation for a small bookshelf speaker, and surprisingly I don’t own any apart from this one.
The kit from Falcon to build LS3/5a can be ordered here:
It arrived to Australia within 3 days of payment, which was amazing!
It took me two nights to put cabinets together, and another night to put xover together and the rest was easy, so apart from it being exciting it is a very fun project, especially if like me, you dont have a clue what to expect.
I have never heard these little speakers before so to me, it was just a play…
Quick enough I put everything together and I Connected them to my 300B amp, and put a record on…
If you understand that there will be physical limitations with these speakers, and obviously in the lower range, and considering the drivers used in this application were drivers from 1977 then you will enjoy every aspect of this project.
These little speakers deliver somewhat a very sweet sound. Speaker or singer is pinpointed to the very center of the stereo image which was amazing after listening to first record.
Getting more into it and throwing some more complex jazz to the speaker, everything in the mid range is amazingly sweet, and strangely in the highs there was no resolution using 300B.
At this point I decided to use the old Audio Research Classic 60, which never failed to impress me. As soon as I plugged it in, with the Audio Research LS-7 preamp, everything seemed to be a different story, the highs were resolving fantastically well with a hint of “BBC dip”. I spent nearly 6 hours until 2am listening to music without realizing that I am enjoying the music so much.
Extremely easy speaker to listen to , its most impressive part is the mid range naturalness and the tiny speakers ability to produce some bass, which is very tight, as well as throw a full sound stage at you.
So far I am extremely happy with these little speakers, and they were purposely left done in plywood which was sanded and finished in teak oil.
Thanks to Jerry and to Falcon for all their help and support and not just with this build…
